Quitman is the county seat of Clarke Co. and a very nice place to live and work. Although some may think not much goes on in Quitman, this certainly is not the case. As a photographer and naturalist who relocated to Quitman in 2004, I have yet to experience a boring day. But then I don't think I've experience a boring day in my entire life! Perhaps it is just me, but I find Quitman a very lovely town with plenty to keep me busy.
What's up around Quitman? Plenty. In December there was the 175th Celebration of Clarke County. A parade was followed by festivities which include singing from the Court House steps and free food and drinks for all who came to celebrate the occasion. It was a lovely sunny day and I was most impress by the lovely ladies dressed in 1800's period costumes!
Quitman has a night life too. You might not believe in, being that Clarke Co. is a dry county, but people do find a way to have fun without drinking alcohol. At the VFW Dance, held in the All Purpose Building, there was a talent show, cake walk, line dancing and a ban to boot! It was quite entertaining and I even found myself moved to get out on the dance floor and rock to an old Elvis tune performed by Bill Burkes and The Mavericks, a Meridian band!

I enjoyed the talent show which included a number of talented individuals singing and playing musical instruments. I was very impress with the range of talent that area residents shared with those attending the dance. Since I didn't get around to expressing my thanks the, let me do it now: thank you everyone, for giving of yourself to make a most enjoyable evening for all present! I highly recommend that you attend the VFW Singles Dances and would like to see more adults of all ages come to these events in the future.

Another wonderful event that is held every month in Quitman is a meeting for Christian Singles at The Living Word Church. I attended my first such meeting on Saturday, February 21, 2009, which consisted of a presentation designed to inspire all in adopting a Christian lifestyle. This was followed by a very appetizing dinner which included home cooked dishes made by the participants and served with love by members of The Living Word Church. It was some of the best cooking I've had is quite a spell! I certainly recommend you attend a future singles dinner at The Living Word Church and see if you agree.

After dinner there was gospel singing which was very moving and inspirational. Why I'd say the gospel singing was the best part of the whole meeting, were it not for all the good food and nice people. Ah, food for the body and food for the soul, why that makes a perfect combination!
Indeed, there is much to do in Quitman, even on a day when there are no public gatherings or sponsored events. One way I enjoy experiencing the community is by exploring for beautiful photographs. I especially like photographing churches, cemeteries and the local flora and fauna. After attending the Christian Singles meeting I made a point to return to the church the next day, which was bright and sunny, to photograph the three crosses in front of the church.

I also discovered some bright yellow Jonquils blooming across the street.

Then I drove over to the First United Methodist Church were I took an inspirational picture of the large crucifix upon the steeple.

Then just up the road I took some photographs of the First Baptist Church which was brightly illuminated by the sun.
