Support Friends of Quitman Public Library

A small group of concerned citizens is organizing the Friends of the Quitman Public Library (FOQPL). This effort is being spearheaded by Mrs. Shylinda "Shy" Walker-McDonald of Quitman. I met with this personable woman on June 22nd at the Quitman Public Library, rather by chance or fate, and we talked about her efforts. I believe this is a very good cause and that others who are interested in seeing our public library grow and prosper should lend a helping hand in any way they can.

It is very important that a community have a good public library, as the library is a source of information and education for the entire community, especially our children. Over time with involvement and support of the community, the library may grow and prosper. The private sector has a responsibility to help the library, and this is where a friends group may aid.

Many communities have friends groups supporting everything from high school and college athletic associations to botanical gardens and museums. I believe that the public library would benefit from a friends group to support the library. Not only would this serve a social function, but it could help with fund raising projects that might involve the community and even reach beyond the boarders of the community.

Certainly a friends group to support and promote the public library is a project worth of every person's generosity. I urge all who like to see that no young mind is wasted, get behind the Friends of Quitman Public Library and become involved. As for myself, I have donated a logo, web site and host services and hope that over time this may serve as a bases for raising tens of thousands of dollars for the Friends of Quitman Public Library, that it may help buy books, videos, office equipment, supplies and even computers and software!

I am sure there are others more wealthy than I who can give even more. I challenge everyone interested in books, learning and the enlightenment which comes from reading to join the Friends of the Quitman Public Library. If we each lend a helping hand to others and we each do what little we can, then the small effort of many becomes a big effort, and before you know it we all prosper together!

I for one support Mrs. Walker-McDonald, who likes to be called "Shy," in her efforts. I'm sure if others will give the same enthusiastic support that in no time at all the Friends of Quitman Public Library will grow into a viable organization of concerned citizens.

Those wishing to help with the Friends of Quitman Public Library may contact Mrs. Shylinda "Shy" Walker-McDonald via email at foqpl@inbox.com or visit FOQPL and get your free on-line membership application. Your support is appreciated!

Please note that currently the Friends of Quitman Public Library is a new, private membership organization; it is NOT a tax exempt organization or charity. However, after speaking with the directory of the Quitman Public Library I understand that they do not have a 501(c)(3) tax exempt status either; that their exemption comes under the umbrella of being part of a state chartered institution. Certainly anyone who contributes to a library friends group or to the public library itself, may be sure their contributions are going to a worthy cause.
