The Edd Harris Park was donated to the City of Quitman in 1961 and is sponsored by the Quitman Womens Club and the City of Quitman. This is a very nice small park located in an oak grove across the street from a private nursery where many children play. The playground equipment on the park is in disrepair. All of the equipment and park benches need to be painted with removal of chipped paint prior to painting. Some of the equipment is damaged and needs repaired as in the case of the swings and seesaws. Some of the swings have dangling chains and one of the seesaws is damaged with exposed metal. Any area where children play should be properly maintained at all times that it is safe and does not present a liability to the city or a risk to children, their health or safety.
I propose that the Edd Harris Park be restored. I will help organize a group of private citizens and community members and sponsoring businesses to restore Edd Harris Park at no cost to the City of Quitman. This will be done as a not-for-profit, private citizens volunteer group to which any individual, business, church or organization may contribute labor, material, supplies, advertising or other in kind material or services. I can contribute my own time, effort and labor to this effort and project if the City of Quitman will endorse and permit this effort.
This may include restoration of playground equipment, installing a sign to give credit to sponsoring businesses or individuals who may also help maintain the park, installing a chain link fence around the park to protect the property and to permit families to be able to bring their children and/or pets to a secure area where they can play. It may also include construction and/or installation of new playground equipment, exercise structures or other donated park equipment.
I petition the City of Quitman to sign a grant of permission to restore and maintain the Edd Harris Park. Thank you for your consideration.
