![]() Relay for Life is scheduled for May 15, 2010 at the Old Mill Factory in Quitman, MS. Events begin at 11:30 AM with entertainment by Elvis Impersonator, Shane Tucker, of Foley, Alabama. I ran into Peggy (above), a devout Christian who is working for the Lord and volunteers her time to Relay for Life. Peggy was at the Old Mill getting ready for Relay for Life which will have twelve teams participating this year. I knew Peggy from the Clarke County Christian Singles where she is also a members. It's always fun chatting with Peggy and I appreciate her taking a few moments of her valuable time to tell me about this year's Relay for life. Peggy said events had originally been scheduled at Archusa Water Park, but they had to be cancelled several times because of bad weather. Peggy is a hard and dedicated worker who has been a Survivor Chairperson with the Relay for Life for seven years. She would like to invite everyone to come on out to the Old Mill Factory on HWY 45 at the south end of town. They will have refreshments and plenty of water. Cancer survivors will be wearing T-shirts which are given to them. You can make a donation at the event or visit the American Cancer Society. You don't have to worry about the weather as this years Relay for Life is now being held indoors and there is plenty of parking space. Events will continue through the day into the night. Illuminated candles inside small paper bags called "luminaries" will line the walk as teams trek around the course. I also spoke with Verlynn Robinon, Event Chairperson, who said their goal is to raise $105,000.00 this year; so far they have received about $55,000 in donaitons. Ms. Robinson explained that with the poor economy fund raising is difficult for everyone. So please come support your favorite team. Anyone can join in the fun and walk around the course, but there are no pets allowed as this is an indoor event, and no one wants to step in doggie poop. So bring the whole family and show your support for the American Cancer Society and Relay for life!

It was disappointing to hear him speculate that the BP oil spill, which is still gushing over 200,000 gallons per day of crude into the Gulf of Mexico, might not be altogether a bad situation, as people can make a profit from the oil spill. Bosworth, President of ArtServe, gave an informative presentation March 1, 2010, at the Train Depot in Quitman, MS, about the nature of arts commissions and their impact upon communities, using as an example his experience working with non-profit groups and some 340 artists in Broward County, Florida. Mr. Bosworth emphasized how "The Arts means business," and the establishment of The Chickasawhay Arts Commission could provide a boost to the local and regional economy.

Playing in the background is the mellow love song "Everything I do I do it for you" by Brian Adams. This was selected as a theme song as it represents that quality of love and service which goes into The Quitman Villager. Although we each live our separate lives, if we embrace the idea that our work is a labor of love, a gift to others, and share our skills, ability and talents with those we love as well as with the community where we make our homes, then sucess will come from all we touch. That is the philosophy reflected in these pages by The Quitman Villager.
