Clarke County celebrated its 175th birthday on Dec. 6, 2008, drawing a crowd of hundreds of people from all around the area. Their could not have been a better day for the festivities, with clear skies and the sun shining bright. I ventured down to the Courthouse with my dog, Jade, to enjoy the celebration and take a few photographs for the record book, that perhaps 100 years from now others may know what Quitman was like in those bygone days.

Hundreds of people came from all over the area to enjoy the free food and festivities which included a parade and live music.

Women volunteered to provide delicious cake and other refreshments.

Contributing to the great success of the celebration were the many vintage-dressed women who served cake and other refreshments.

This decorated cake featured a photograph of the Baptist Church proclaiming, "God is the reason for the season."

The Clarke County Tribune office was featured upon this cake. I must admit it is the best tasting publication they've ever produced! Although they publish a fine weekly newspaper to which I subscribe, I wish it were as sweet as these cakes!

I was most impressed with the women in period dress from the late 1800's who added much to the spirit of the celebration. Mrs. Annie Crim of Quitmen graciously posed for this photo wearing a dress made by a friend.

Entertainment was provided by area musicians who played from the Clarke County Courthouse steps.

I hope that everyone enjoyed the days festivities as much as I did and would like to invite everyone to come back to visit Quitman.
