Letter to the Editor - For Immediate Release
SUBJECT: Impeachment Unjust and Illegal Scam! The partisan impeachment of President Clinton is unjust, if not illegal, for a number of reasons: First, no fact witnesses were produced by Republicans to offer evidence that the President had, indeed, committed perjury or obstruction of justice. Republicans relied solely upon the Starr Report which was a lopsided smear campaign and scam against the President. This is an accurate description of the Starr Report because the President's counsel had no opportunity to cross examine a single iota of so called "fact" presented by the Starr Report. Hence we have impeachment by rumor and gossip, not by fair due process and rule of law. Very likely if the government paid a team of prosecutors $50 million to investigate any politician it would be possible to mount a one-sided case against them, especially if the investigation included inquiry into a person's personal life and sexual relationships. Such government sponsored special prosecutions are not evidence gathering so much as they are the collection of mud, of QUESTIONABLE facts. The point republicans seemed to over look is that a "fact" gathered is not by its discovery "true," but is only to be found "true" or "false" after cross examination in a court of law; that then a jury weighs each fact and gives it merit or demerit. Hence every so called "fact" gathered by the Starr Report, is equally true or false; and indeed each fact has a weight of its own that can only be fairly determined by an impartial jury, not a prejudice partisan process. There is NO absolute truth, only a degree of truth. In this regard the President told as much truth as he did lies and enabled the process of justice as much as he obstructed it. Therefore the President can not be guilty of either perjury or obstruction of justice and must be acquitted by any fair and just trial the Senate conducts. Second, the republicans who voted for President Clinton's impeachment never specified exactly what he lied about or exactly how he obstructed justice, given that in no instance does it seem any justice has been obstructed... that is to say, Paul Jones had her day in court and settled her case while it was under appeal for an enormous amount, probably greater than any sum she would have been awarded by a jury. Paul Jones even accepted an additional $1-million dollar private offer for her actions, which might be looked upon as a bribe or offer to obstruct justice, given settlement prevented final rule upon appeal which would likely have cleared the President of any wrong doing in regards to matters related to the Paula Jones case, or at the very least would have led to a trial in which case there is no guarantee Paul Jones would have won her case or received any where near the amount she received through settlement and private offers. Third, republicans who voted to impeach President Clinton never defined what constituted high crimes and misdemeanors. If fact, the so called crimes President Clinton is alleged to have committed do not rise to the level of impeachable offenses even if they did occur. This is what the majority of U.S. Constitutional scholars have professed. Therefore President Clinton's impeachment is illegal, for he has been impeached not for any significant crime against the republic, but for having an extra marital affair and allegedly lying about it. Under these circumstances the public should rally around the President and call for the resignation of all Congressional representatives who voted to impeach the President. This is because said representatives have shown by their vote that they are not qualified for office as they do not understand the U.S. Constitution or represent the majority opinion of the people in these United States. The public would be further justified in calling for Kenneth Starr to be fired as Special Prosecutor. In fact, barring this, I suggest the public burn Kenneth Starr and Henry Hyde in effigy for their unjust impeachment of the President of the United States. By burning these over zealous republicans in effigy we the people will light a fire in the minds of humanity which will restore our president to that power he was given by the majority of Americans who elected him to the highest office in this land, despite any short coming, marital infidelities or personal weaknesses he may have expressed in the past.
