Owner: Terrence A. Lynch

Jade was two years old on March 6, 1999. He currently weighs 78.5 pounds and is a very active dog. He is in excellent health. Several interesting observations attest to Jade's intelligence and outstanding breeding:

Jade has an excellent gait, the angelic prance of a purebred GSD. His vision is acute as he can see small insects and will even chase a fly if it lands too near him for comfort. Jade can catch tennis balls when they are thrown rapidly toward him, even at night! This suggest he has excellent night vision. Jade has a good herding instinct as when many tennis balls are placed down, he will tend to keep track of them, occasionally going from one to the other, as if checking to be sure all are present. Well, maybe this isn't exactly what you would call a herding instinct. Let's just say he likes to count his balls :-)

Jade learns how to solve problems fast as indicated by throwing a ball inside a fenced area; when Jade sees that he can not get to the ball, he will find the gate, go through it, walk around to get the ball and bring it back. Jade can also locate hidden balls and has a strong retrieving instinct.

Jade is also a very high energy, active dog. Jade has good agility and quick reflexes in that he is able to do such things as quickly grab a ball which bounces unexpectedly in any direction. Jade is also able to turn quickly to avoid obstacles when on the run. Some dogs of less agility may run into objects or not react quickly to changing events. True, this is not the strong indicator that agility competiton would be. Damn, maybe I should start a local agility club :-)

Jade is very alert and will perk up upon hearing any unusual noise and bark at strangers who approach his fenced yard. Jade also loves playing in water. He seems insensitive to cold or rain, probably owing to his fine double coat. Jade also appears to have a natural instinct to protect his master. On several occasions when walking Jade on leash, other dogs off leash or behind fences would approach aggressively, barking and snarling. Jade would always respond by attempting to defend and protect his master... good for those other dogs Jade was under control or I'm certain he would have supplemented his diet with Dachshund, Terrier or Pug!

Jade is in excellent health and has been maintained upon medication to prevent heartworms and flea infestation. In fact I have never seen a single flea upon Jade! That's quite remarkable given the hot, humid conditions of central Alabama are ideal for fleas. Also, Jade's teeth are in excellent condition! He has a good bite and gets praise from his veterinarian for being such a easy dog to handle when giving vaccinations.

Attention breeders! Jade's 24 months radiographs were evaluated by OFA and rated as: GOOD See OFA#: GS-55264G24M-T! A preliminary evaluation by the veterinarian reported that, "no radiographic changes associated with hip dysplasia (subluxation of the femoral head, degenerative joint disease, alteration of architecture of the femoral head and acetabulum) were observed." Jade's hips were then OFA'ed as GOOD.

Update: As of May 2000 Jade has no titles. He has never been in any competitions. As Jade's owner I am very interested in having him participate in some form of activity related to his working ability. In this regard I am interested in hearing from handlers or trainers. Please contact me at Help Jade grow and develop his potential!

Recommendation

Given these observations I conclude that Jade agility, reflexes and senses are excellent which reflects well upon his breeder. Jade does not appear to have any known physical or temperament defects. When you add to this what I know about Lynda Montgomery's knowledge of dogs and her work with them, I would highly recommend Jade's breeder, Lynda Montgomery of Bahnbrecher Old Style German Shepherds, to anyone considering purchase of an Old-Style German Shepherd. Also she is the person to contact for specifics with regard to the nature of this special bloodline of dogs.

Lynda is what I call a real dog person, who spends 100% of her time living, breathing and talking dogs. It least that was the impression I got when I went to visit her home in Arizona. She has shown and titled her dogs and does medical testing and screening of all her dogs. She keeps in contact with everyone who purchases one of her puppies. I understand they usually command a high price of $1,000.00 or more. That may seem a lot to some, but given the time and effort she spends with her dogs and the quality of dogs she breeds, it is an investment well spent!
