I am Woman

God, why have you forsaken me?
I am but woman,
Yet I have been shackled and chained,
I have been denied the same equality
That you have given man.

God, why have you forsaken me?
I am but woman,
A young, innocent girl,
Yet you let men strip me naked,
Take me without my consent,
Rape and ravish me the whole world over
For thousands of years on end.

God, why have you forsaken me?
I am but woman,
A mature, intelligent, beautiful woman,
Yet you let powerful, corrupt men
Work me to death for no or little pay
That I who have given them children
And love am worth so little.

God, why have you forsaken me?
I am but woman,
A wise old woman once,
Now cast out from society,
My rights, dignity and respect
Taken away by the state,
Locked away behind electric doors,
Left to rot away and die alone
Confined to prison cell called a nursing home!
Why God, why, have you forsaken me?

This poem was inspired by the incarceration of my dear mother in a nursing home in Montgomery, Alabama. Probate Judge Creese McKinney, Jr., declared my mother a ward of the state of Alabama and made a virtual prisoner out of her. She has since be exploited by corrupt judges, lawyers and nursing home administrators and financially raped and robbed of her income, assets and property. This is a great miscarriage of justice and is being repeated over and over again, not only in Alabama, but across America! Treating women like animals, warehousing them and then exploiting them, amounts to modern day slavery in America! It is a crime against humanity which effects millions of elderly women who have done nothing but grow old; they have not committed any crime, they have not hurt or harmed anyone; all they have done is grow old. It is a disgrace to our great nation, these United States of America, that our dear parents are treated with such disrespect, indignity and injustice! To draw attention to the danger of over exposure to the sun I have created a series of gifts and apparel entitled, "Don't forget your shirt." These may be viewed and purchased in the Cancer Awareness Gallery along with many other great cause gifts and apparel.
