Each Necklace of Life has been handcrafted using super strong, extra flexible bead cord (or monofilament) noted for its exceptional durability and strength. The acorns have been heat treated at 180 ºF for 60 minutes to kill any larvae or other organisms as acorn larvae can chew through nylon, polyester, silk and other cord; then each acorn was treated with aromatic oil and polished to a high luster. Water Oak acorns are used to make the Necklace of Life as these are a hard acorn that is resistant to rot and decay; hence they produce a quality bead that rivals any gemstone in beauty. Each acorn is collected by hand, inspected, drilled and polished to produce a quality beading product. Only a limited number of Necklaces of Life are made upon special request and commission, given the amount of time it takes to collect the acorns and handcraft the necklace is significant.

Over time water oak acorns may acquire a golden luster; hence these are often referred to as golden oaks trees or golden acorns. Sunlight and air (oxygen) cause this natural goldenation of the acorns at which time they may be stained with any wood stain if you would like a darker coloration. Also the golden acorns may be painted. However, currently the Necklace of Life is being shipped after stringing the natural polished acorn beads.

Care of your Necklace of Life. The Necklace of Life will give you many years of satisfactory wear if you care for it properly. You may maintain the luster of acorns by treating them with linseed oil or other wood polishing oils. Pledge Revitalizing Oil is recommended for maintaining your necklace in good condition. This also helps prevent the acorn shells from drying out and/or absorbing moisture and becoming susceptible to mold or mildew. The Necklace of Life should be maintained in a dry container; a cedar or other jewelry box is ideal for storage. Desiccants may also be used to prevent occurrence of moisture. Also you may maintain these necklaces by hanging them in a clear, dry room where they have ornamental value and may receive complements of admiration from your visitors and guests. If the cord breaks you may restring the acorn beads on a quality bead cord, monofilament, wire or high quality nylon thread.
