Dates of service and duties:
16 Feb. 1943-7 Nov. 1944 Served with the Artillery as a basic instructor. Attained the rank of Corporal. Attended Transportation Corps Officers Candidate School, New Orleans, Louisiana 4 months 8 Nov. 1944-23 May 1946: Cargo Security Officer in Pacific Campaign against Japan. Implemented the securement of supplies and communications in a wide theater of operations effecting superior results. This period involved transport and stationing in the Western Pacific Zone and Ryukyu Islands Zone (Okinawa). While acting as dispatch carrier was fired upon by Japanese sniper. Return fire resulted in killing of sniper and successful completion of mission. Ships were also fired upon by torpedos. 3 April 1946 Received appointment as First Lieutenant, Transportation Corp dated 4 Dec 1946. Through May 1953: Was stationed in Germany to participate in reconstruction effort and coordinate occupation Army support and transportation operations after WWII. Was later stationed in Seattle, WA to serve in command and support of materials and supplies with respect to "Police Action" operation during the Korean War. 1 June 1954-30 April 1955: Commanding Officer of Outport #3, Masan, Hq & Hq Co, 7th Trans Port Comd C, APO 59, US Army. Command operations of supply and support for occupation forces in the Korean theater of operations following the cease-fire and armistice (27 July 1953) of the Korean War. Through 27 Feb 1957 Duty with 395th Transportation Battalion, Camp Leroy Johnson, New Orleans, LA Demonstrated outstanding leadership, technical knowledge of operations and high degree of excellence and proficiency to making this the best battalion in the United States Army. 19 April 1957-26 August 1960: Received Army Commendation Medal for outstanding meritorious service performed at Headquarters, U.S. Army Communications Zone, Europe and Headquarters, 37th Transportation Highway Transport Command, Orleans, France. Effectively coordinated and supervised operations of five widely dispersed transportation battalions involving constructive planning, implementation of policies and procedures and conduct of special assignments in a superior manner. *** Classified Cold War operations involving evacuation plans for central Europe in event of USSR invasion or nuclear war *** 14 Nov 1960-13 Oct 1962 Fort McClellan, Alabama Transportation Officer serving U.S. Army Garrison, U.S. Women's Army Corps Center and National Guard and Army Reserve Units. Involved in all aspects of transportation including supply, planning and support and training of area armed forces operations. Alabama Commendation Medal (6 June 1962) awarded by governor Patterson for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished military service to the Alabama National Guard with respect to training guard units for emergency crisis deployment. Through 20 Aug. 1963: Commanding Officer of the 514th Transportation Company (Lt Trk) directing all facilities and personnel. *** Second duty in Korea Cold War Classified Operations involving troop deployment and security *** 30 Dec 1963-31 Oct. 1967 U.S. Army Advisor to 131st Supply and Transportation Battalion, Alabama Army National Guard. Responsible for implementing the logistical command, supply, support and security effecting the Selma to Montgomery Civil Rights march which took place March 21-25, 1965. This operation involved the deployment of some 4,000 National Guard troops federalize by Commander in Chief of Lyndon B. Johnson. Voice communication with Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy was maintained throughout the march. This exemplary leadership insured a successful march without any lose of life, either civilian or military during the period of deployment. Received Certificate of Achievement signed by Allan M. Cory reading, "This Certificate of Achievement is awarded to Major Leonard P. Lynch, 01948352, TC, US Army, for outstanding performance of duty as U.S. Army Advisor to: 131st Supply and Transportation Battalion, Alabama Army National Guard since 30 December 1963. He has rendered service in a position requiring tact and diplomacy. His outstanding professional knowledge, aggressive leadership and willingness to assist in all phases of supply, operations, planning and training have been of invaluable assistance during this period. His expert advice and competent assistance has earned for him the highest respect and admiration of all officers and men of the 131st Supply and Transportation Battalion. These outstanding services reflect great credit upon Major Lynch, the U.S. Army Advisor Group (ARNGUS) Alabama and the United States."
