Sweeter Than Chicken
By Terry Lynch
(Chorus)
My spirit finally free,
Not bounded by land or sea
My spirit finally free,
Like an eagle flying high
My spirit finally free,
You inside me, me inside you
My spirit finally free,
What a wondrous feeling is this being free.
I met a man selling monkeys
On a boat down the Congo
Not as pets but to eat,
Boiled or broiled on a skewer
He said they taste just like chicken
But a little bit sweeter
The monkey just cried,
"Yeeeeeek!"Yeeeeeek!"Yeeeeeek!"
I met a poacher in the bush
With his big gun smoke'n
Bragging how many elephants
He had shot and the ivory hauled
Of the rhino slaughtered for their magic
Horns, sex potion powders 'n knife handles
Of the lion he had killed,
Its claws dangling a talisman 'round his neck.
I met a Jaycee in Opp Alabama
Rounding up rattlesnakes for the rodeo
We race 'em, bag 'em, boil 'em,
Milk 'em, fry 'em, wear 'em
They taste just like chicken,
Here try, a bit sweeter
Decked out in rattlesnake boots, vest, hat
And a lucky rattle 'round a redder than red neck.
Now I do not know why
But in Thailand they eat dogs
An old man in the market place
Told me they taste like chicken
But who are we to judge abandoning 'n'
Euthenizing millions of man's best friends
Dumping their empty bodies in land fills,
Looking the other way
(chorus)
...Yet from what I see
We must take greater responsibility
...Yet from what I see we must
Change our heart and change our minds
...Yet from what I see we must
Stop killing 'n eating every chicken sweet thing
...Yet from what I see we must
Save our planet first if we ever hope
To save ourselves or a single god fearing soul!
Remarks
This song was written while listening to John Denver's Wildlife Concert
broadcast on the Arts and Entertainment network on October 18, 1997. While
writing the song I had a vision of John Denver's spirit traveling free around
the world, spreading throughout humanity. But there were many things he
saw which sickened his heart and which he wanted to sing out in protest about.
A few of these things are expressed in this song. Take them to heart, but go
further and take action to help preserve wildlife both at home and abroad.
