A Cold day! Making Ice Ickel Art.

Just how cold is it today? Well when I went outside my dog's water bowl was frozen over. The ice was 12.8 mm thick! It is the coldest day so far this winter ... well, it is just about the first day of winter, so perhaps this means it will be a cold, cold winter. Maybe I should head south for the winter like all the snow birds do.

Ice Art
Ice ickel art. Frozen disc of ice from dog's water bowl.

Hey, maybe I've just invented a new form of art! Perhaps I'll take some pizza pans or other shallow bowls, add leaves and other objects to them, then let them freeze and take pictures of the resulting blocks of ice! I'll call these "Iceickles" or "Ice Ickel Art." Anyone else want to try this and send me their ice ickel art. Send it to Ice Ickel Art Gallery. Maybe we can start something here. See what you can find to add to your frozen pans of ice ickel art: colorful leaves, marbles, flowers, string, colorful plastic, etc. The neat thing about this form of art is that it only lasts until the sun comes out and melts the ice, so it is very transcendental, like the sand paintings of American Indians and other eastern cultures who practice the art of sand paintings. One idea would also to be to add a piece of string or wire so that the resulting disc of ice might be suspended in mid air to photograph it, such that one may take a picture of the ice ickel art against any desired background without it having to rest upon a support.

How to make Ice Ickel Art

After discovering the above shown ice ickel art in my dog's water bucket, I decided to make more such art. This is a great transendental art project for the cold, winter months and children of all ages.

To make ice ickel art just take any flat bowl or container and fill it up with water. Then add any objects which your heart desires: flower petals, acorns, leaves, twigs, rocks, marbles, wire, nails, screws, bolts, etc. Set these flat trays outside when temperatures are below freezing. Leave until the water turns to ice. Then take a picture of the resulting ice ickel art and presto, you have your unique creation.

I will be posting additional examples of my own ice ickel art on this page in the future along with other treasures I find on the net. This may include links to wild and bizarre sites. I'd also like to post ice ickel art that others make so send me your picks.

Ice Art
Ice ickel art. Shallow plastic pie pan is used to make ice ickel art.

The above photo shows an ice ickel art in production. A shallow plastic pie pan was filled with water. Items collected around the yard were added including: rose petals, acorns and leaves. A screw attached to a piece of wire was added to be used to hang the ice ickel art up for later photographing. The was set outside over night to freeze. The resulting ice ickel art will be posted when it is completed.

Four Orbs
Four Orbs. Ice ickel art made by placing rose petals, oak leaves and acorns in a shallow plastic pie pan and letting it freeze. The resulting frozen orb of ice was suspended from a wire, back lighted with a flashlight and photographed with a SANYO digital camera VPC-X360. The resulting image was digitally enhanced and the above composite produced.

As you can see from the above ice ickel art, very attractive and colorful images may be easily produced using this method. All one needs is a pan of water, a cold night and a bit of imagination!

Please wait! It takes time to freeze.

More ice ickel art will be posted here in the future. Everyone is encouraged to make their own ice ickel art and send their pics. I'd especially like to see pictures of people holding up their ice ickel art discs. Some challenges are to make very large discs, different shapes and sizes of ice ickel art and to show people of all ages with their ice ickel art. Send your ice ickel art pics to Ice Ickel Art Gallery.

Ice Photographs by D. Hirmes This is a very nice presentation of frozen ice photographs taken by freezing ice inside bowls and other objects placed inside the refrigerator, then photographing them in a darkened room using a flashlight and Canon Powershot S45 and regular handhead magnifying glasses for closeups.

Ice Art Each year Fairbanks, Alaska host an Ice-Art Festival. This involves sculpting from blocks of ice and is a month long event held in March. I guess if you live in Alaska such monolithic ice sculptures are possible. This much be Heaven on Ice for ice artists. For additional information see World Ice Art Champoinships.
