Animal Adoption & Rescue Organizations

The following area and regional animal adoption and rescue organization are available and each operate independently to serve their respective communities.

Alabama

  • Alabama Animal Rescue

  • Alabama Animal Shelters via Animal Shelters.org

  • West Alabama Animal Rescue, Brookwood, AL -- WAAR is a non-profit tax-exempt that works with the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter to help foster animals that are sick or need behavior modification so that the shelter can adopt out and we also take out animals that would otherwise be destroyed due to heartworms, illness, or space. We then work with other groups to get them up north to find homes. We are sorry but we cannot take animals from the public . . what funds we have must be spent on the many homeless animals rescued from our local shelter. We receive no local, state or federal funding. Donations from our many friends and our own efforts, through fundraising, are our only source of income. Medical expenses for the animals we rescue represent 100% of every donated dollar. All of our dogs are located at different foster homes all over Tuscaloosa and Birmingham; they are not in one location. Our adoption application is available on-line and will be sent to you, routinely, with our answer to your initial inquiry. We make every effort to prequalify applicants so the waiting period between rescue and placement is shortened. Anyone wishing to adopt should complete the application so the approval process is initiated. The adoption fee is $125 for dogs and $85 for cats. All animals will be spayed/neutered before adoption. Location and contact: West Alabama Animal Rescue, PO BOX 587, BROOKWOOD, AL 35444. Phone: 205-462-0353 Email: waaradoptions@aol.com. Please view our Adoptable Pets List.

  • German Shepherd Rescue of Central Alabama, Montgomery, AL -- This group maintains a very high standard and is doing everything right in an effort to find forever homes for German Shepherds. German Shepherd Rescue of Central Alabama is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit, 'No Kill' rescue organization. We rescue German Shepherds out of shelters and from abusive situations. We take in abandoned and stray dogs, and we take owner surrenders as space allows. All dogs are neutered or spayed, current on shots and have tested negative for heartworms before they are placed in their forever home. These dogs are kept in private homes and will be shown by appointment only to APPROVED applicants. We do our best to help out any German Shepherd dog in need (primarily in the state of Alabama); unfortunately, we have limited space and finances. It takes time and money to get most of our rescue babies up to good health and full adoption status. We also help people who are having problems with their German Shepherds. We would like to help owners work through the problems rather than have to give their dog up. Location and contact: German Shepherd Rescue of Central Alabama, PO Box 640561, Pike Road, AL 36064.
