The Miracle Oak Tree, aka The Great Mississippi Golden Leaf Water Oak is a majestic tree that survived hurrican Katrina and is over 100 years old! The trunk is over 3.3 feet in diameter suggesting that the tree was planted in the late 1800's. The acorns from this majestic tree are now available exclusively to home owners, gardeners, nurseries, tree farmers, teachers, students and others who would like to grow one of these majestic trees and leave it to their children and grand children.

Not all trees of a given species are the same; just as people vary from individual to individual, so do trees. There is, in fact, great variation within any species. This includes such factors as resistance to disease, longevity and cellular characteristics which may contribute such factors as structure. A tree which grows strong, weathers many seasons and storms, reaches maturity and becomes a great giant of its species may have qualities that were lacking in trees that were inferior and never reached their prime. Others probability factors do contribute to a trees survival, such as fires, storms, lightening, being cut down my human, etc. But still, a tree which weathers all storms and survives given its grander and beauty, perhaps exhibits attributes superior to trees which do not survive. Hence, it makes sense that when selecting seeds, or in this case acorns, to use to grow new trees, one should select from the greatest tree they can find, one that has proven itself over time. The Great Mississippi Golden Leaf Water Oak is just such a tree; hence its acorns are of premium quality and stock!
This particular tree has proven itself as a great buttressing master. It has a trunk that measures 3.3 feet in diameter near the base. This broad trunk extends upward some 21 feet before branching; at the apex the tree is approximately 103 feet high, with broad and dense canopy which provides much shade. This particular tree withstood the hurricane force winds of Katrina which toppled many similar species trees from the gulf coast through central Mississippi. Hence it makes sense to select the premium acorns from this majestic water oak, and to propagate them over a lesser tree that has not proven itself against the storm of the century! The Great MS Golden Leaf Water Oak may be expected to grow in the hardiness ranges 6-9 shown on the map below.

After Columbus discovered America, these majestic trees began to disappear as the largest trees would be cut down and used to build and heat homes. During the 1500 and 1600 most of the largest The Great Mississippi Golden Leaf Water Oak disappeared. Many were used in the construction of plantations, only to be burnt to the ground and destroyed during the Civil War. By the 1800's and early 1900's all the old growth forest where these trees dominated were gone; new trees however were alive and growing. By 2000 a number of old giants reoccurred and from one of the largest Great Mississippi Golden Leaf Water Oaks acorns have been collected.
These premium acorns are very precious as they come from an old giant which still survives and proved its hardiness by with standing hurricane Katrina. Seeds from this tree may therefore be regarded as of exceptional quality and great value. Only a limited number of these seeds are available. Complete instructions for how to germinate your seeds are available upon The Great Mississippi Golden Leaf Water Oak web site (this page -- see below). These are extremely easy tree seeds to germinate. Basically you may plant them in moist sand or potting soil; they will germinate in 30 to 70 days (depending upon temperature and light period). Note: You should plant all acorns whether they float or not; many acorns will germinate even if they float. The floating test for acorns in NOT reliable; factors which cause an acorn not to germinate are if it has been attacked by weevils or other forms of rot or disease.

We are primarily interested in providing these premium acorns to those who will take the time and attention to germinate them and provide the the seedlings with a secure location to grow and mature. After the acorns germinate they may be transplanted to a large, 5 gallon pot, or set outside. When transplanted outside, you should place a small cylindrical fence around the seedling to protect it from damage by lawn mowers. A piece of hardware cloth type cage wire or other fencing wire works well for this purpose. Some people also like to place a metal or wooden post next to their seedling to help provide support and mark the location for the first few years of growth.
These majestic trees grow very rapidly and may reach 50 to 110 feet in height and produce a canopy 50 to 80 feet wide. They provide a deep shade canopy and are an ideal species of tree to plant to help provide shade around homes, and hence conserve energy, a consideration which makes them a great choice to plant for your children and grandchildren. Also because this variety of oak is rapid growing, it makes an excellent tree to plant to watch growing yourself, as well as to be enjoyed by your children and grand children, who may then carry on the tradition of planting new generations of these trees.
The Great Mississippi Golden Leaf Water Oak is a very rapid growing hardwood tree. In the first 10 years of growth it may obtain a base diameter of 6 to 12 inches. At 50 years the Great Mississippi Golden Leaf Water Oak may reach 50 feet in height. Ultimately the Great Mississippi Golden Leaf Water Oak may obtain a base trunk diameter of more than three feet with the trunks reaching 20 to 30 feet before branching. This is one reason these majestic oaks were cut and harvested to use in building homes by the original settlers of America as well as plantation builders. Because these trees produce a reddish to white hardwood the old giants were in great demand, making the old trees the target of the lumber yards and mills -- which is another reason few of the old giants exist.

In this manner seedlings will be protected and may easily be grown to produce young trees that will then begin to rapidly mature. It is also recommended that each tree be marked and labeled with a tag or a plaque, dedicating the tree to a person or pet, such that the tree will serve as an honorarium, and hence be more likely to be preserved by others as a precious trees.

A hardy tree is one that is able to resist such diseases and pests and grow strong, robust and live a long life. The Great Mississippi Golden Leaf Water Oak is just such a tree. Its leaves may be attacked by various fungi causing spots. Beetles may attack its bark. Gall wasp and other insects parasitize the tree. Mistletoe and lichen may grow upon the oak without causing any great harm. The most hardy trees survive and flourish whereas weaker trees may be injured or even die before they reach their maximum age. This is one reason most water oaks do not exceed 60 to 80 years in age. Planting Instructions: Acorns from The Great Mississippi Golden Leaf Water Oak express deep, rich coloration and will produce a strong, hardy tree. Plant sets of acorns in a large flower pot of moist potting soil; they germinate in 30-70 days, depending upon temperature and daylight lenght. These water oak seeds have a 60-94 percent germination at 68 degrees F; you may also plant them outdoors in seed beds which may result in better germination. Keep soil moist, but not soaked. Acorns may be planted just beneath the soil or pressed one-half way into soil, as this is the manner nature plants them. Water as necessary to maintain moisture. If grown indoors it may help to cover the top of the pot with a clear plastic bag to avoid too much evaporation due to low indoor humidity. Some people like to use stratification (cold storage) prior to planting in pots. This can be done by soaking acorns in water 24-48 hours; then place in a zip-lock bag with moist soil, sand or paper towels. Set in lower vegetable storage compartment inside refrigerator for 60 days or until acorns begin to germinate. Once acorns germinate, seedlings may be transplanted to separate large, 5 gallon flower pots or transplanted outdoors. Usage of an organic fertilizer is recommended for seedlings to avoid root damage. Place a fence barrier around seedlings to protect them from damage by lawn mowers; a wooden or metal pole may also be used to mark the seedlings and help support young trees as they grow.

Memorial Tribute to Mrs. Betty Fitz-Gerald The late "Miss. Betty" Fitz-Gerald was a strong advocate for planting trees and served as the Goodwill Ambassodor for Montgomery, Alabama in her senior years. I attended a number of Arbor Day tree plantings and dedications at which Miss. Betty spoke, encouraging the planting of trees to beautify the community. Miss. Betty was a kind, generous and very reverent person who influenced and inspired me to appreciate the value of Arbor Day and planting tree. May others here your call from beyond the grave, Miss. Betty, to plant a tree! (TAL 7 Dec. 2008)
