SUBJECT: Vital students learn how to write

How is it that our schools are not teaching children how to write? This is a terrible failure of the public education system and should be rectified immediately.

First we should test all public school teachers to see if they know how to write. This should include how to write articles, letters, reports, essays, stories, poetry and other froms of literature. Teachers who are not up to par should be required to take courses and learn how to write themselves.

Then we should make writing a part of every classroom, not just English class, but math, science, history, and even physical education. Homework assignments should include having to write about everything from Civil War battles and evolution to current events and the relationship between diet and exercise.

I would also recommend that teachers encourage their students to write by submitting letters to the editor of local media. Also writing projects should motivate students to learn how to design and produce websites related to their courses of study. Certainly creative writing projects which motivate students to produce stories, poetry and essays would help develop and tone writing skills.

Being able to write has much to do with being able to think clearly and work out solutions to problems. If Alabama students do not know how to write they are not going to be among those who solve problems faced by our state and nation in the future; rather, they are more likely to be part of the problems we are trying to solve, like the overcrowding of our prison systems!
