Subject: How to save the Blue-Gray games

Perhaps a title sponsor would be easy to find for the Blue-Gray Classic if it were simply renamed, emphasizing the sponsor's name and the fact the event benefits charity.

I imagine sponsors would line up if the games were called the Hyundai Charity Bowl or the Mercedes Charity Bowl. This would give such good publicity to a major corporation that sponsorship would be irresistible.

You have to realize that companies like Hyundai and Mercedes have an international image to maintain and project. Association with an out dated, divisive name like "Blue-Gray" is not conducive to a positive international image.

However, by emphasizing charity and giving the title sponsor top billing, this negative aspect would be over come. Everyone would benefit by this simple name change solution. Montgomery would benefit. The children would benefit and the title sponsor would benefit.

This is the type of progressive thinking our town needs as we move into the 21st century. What worked in 1939 does not work in 2002. So as Clint Eastwood so eloquently expressed in Heart Break Ridge, we need to adapt, improvise, overcome!

Creative solutions can be found to fix almost everything that needs fixed with our community. This is just one example of how to fix a problem. But unless we are willing to set aside the old and replace it with the new, then good traditions may die and fade away like extinct species, never to be seen again.

Sincerely,
Terry Lynch
