Of course to eliminate property tax just for our senior citizens may seem unfair; therefore, property taxes should be eliminated for everyone! Instead it would be more just to tax income such that all people would be taxed at an equal rate.
Obviously with an equal tax rate applied to all income, low income people will pay less tax per individual than the rich; but because there are more low income people than rich people, the tax burden would be equal for both groups. This approach to taxation would give relief to fixed income seniors who would not be faced with ever increasing property taxes. Plus the added tax dollars this would bring from the wealthiest sectors of society would enable the state to provide much needed services to our senior citizens instead of cutting back programs for the elderly.
Elimination of the property tax and the unfair burden this causes elderly and low income people becomes ever more important in the near future as longevity increases the number of senior citizens in our community. To not recognize this fact and eliminate the property tax statewide amounts to state sanctioned abuse and neglect of our parents and grandparents. Looking at it this way makes it very clear that the only tax reform bill worth supporting is one that abolishes property tax!
Sincerely,
Terry Lynch
