There is action that every citizen can take to protest this increase in tax, an increase that the people did not vote for or chose. Here is a list of actions for everyone to take to protest this unjust taxation.
1. Do your shopping outside of the city limits whenever possible. Make a weekly trip to neighboring communities to buy groceries, clothing, hardware and other perishables.
2. Retired military families which have been patronizing malls, shopping centers and local businesses should make an extra effort to do all their shopping at the PX or commissary on Maxwell or Gunter AFB where the 10% city sales tax does not apply.
3. Shop on-line for everything! You can buy books at Amazon.com. You can shop for bargains on E-bay. Virtually everything anyone needs can be purchased on-line to avoid paying the outrageous 10% sales tax.
4. Write and telephone your city council members and tell them you are going to refuse to pay the sales tax by doing everything in your power to avoid shopping in Montgomery.
The people have the power to protest this sales tax increase. If the City of Montgomery and local businesses realize that an increased sales tax is going to hurt them, they may come to their senses and lower the sales tax back to a reasonable amount of 8% on the dollar and weed out unnecessary jobs like grass height inspectors and paper shufflers.
Sincerely,
Terry Lynch
