SUBJECT: Comparing Moore and Wallace inappropriate

Some people have tried to compare Roy Moore's placement of the Ten Commandments monument in the state Judicial Building with the late Gov. George C. Wallace's stand in the school house door. There is a BIG difference between these two issues.

When Wallace stood in the school house door he was opposing a federal court order to integrate the University of Alabama. This was a just order which sought to provide equal educational opportunity for black people. Moore's opposition to a federal court order to remove the Ten Commandments monument from the courthouse also opposes a just order to prevent the state establishment of religion.

Make no doubt about it, there is currently a divine rights movement underway orchestrated by right wing religious fundamentalist who seek to introduce their view of religion into all aspects of government. This extends from laws to allow prayer in school to laws which mandate that a particular version of the Decalogue be displayed in public buildings. It also involves religious groups and organizations lobbying to oppose everything from the educational lottery to tax reform.

Alabama is in a very desperate condition. Much of this disparity is the result of right wing religious groups becoming involved in every aspect of government such that Alabama is slowly moving toward a theocracy. Why in many areas you can not get elected to public office unless you have the backing of religious groups.

When Wallace opposed integration of public schools he did so based upon the principle of "segregation forever." This doctrine included the principle of separate but equal opportunity. The problem with a move toward theocracy is that it ultimately establishes a state religion and unless you profess that particular brand of religion, you may be denied rights and liberties, shunned from public office and every aspect of your life ridiculed.

We are already seeing aspects of this "My God or None" philosophy being displayed by those who support Roy's rock. It is the "Either you are with me or against me" attitude that somehow if you support removal of the Ten Commandments monument and upholding the law, you will be persecuted. Your good name will be dirtied, you will be figuratively tarred and feathered through negative advertising by the fundamentalist broadcasting network until the public is so brain washed that you are removed from public office.

This is, in essence, how hate groups such as the KKK operate in modern society, suggesting that such groups or their members have infiltrated churches and are a driving force behind the move toward theocracy. This is a very dangerous situation as the next thing you know federal judges could be getting bombs in the mail!

Should we bow down and submit to those who would turn Alabama into a theocracy, many people will be persecuted for their religious beliefs. You will not be able to serve in public office unless you submit to the theocratic dictates of those who hold up their version of God's law and say, "Believe or parish!"

Roy Moore is no George Wallace! Wallace was a politician, perhaps a great one. Moore is nothing more than a holy roller committing judicial suicide, slowly but surely sinking in quick sand of his own making!
