It's A Jungle Out There!

Are bugs eating your garden or destroying your crops? Do you have a problem with insects in or around your home? Would you like to know what they are?

It's a jungle out there, but what are the beasts? Bugs are devouring gardens and destroying millions of dollars of crops every year. Indeed, it is a jungle out there and the bugs or insect pests are winning the war.

In order to effectively and economically control insect pests it is first necessary to know what type of insect is invading your home or infecting your garden or crop. One of the biggest mistakes home owners, gardeners, and farmers make is treating plants with insecticides without first identifying the variety of insect that is invading their homes or infecting their crop. Hence they waste time, money and effort. Although many experienced farmers may know what type of insects are infecting their crops, this remains a mystery to many home gardeners. A lot of time, money and effort is wasted by home owners and gardeners simply because they do not know what they are dealing with when it comes to insect pests. This is especially true in the case of home vegetable and flower gardeners who want to control insect pests but not use highly toxic, cancer causing insecticides.

The first step in controlling insect pests is to have them properly identified. Unfortunately most people do not know what type of insect they find upon flowers or vegetables in their garden. A bug is a bug by any other name; that is the extent to which many people identify pests. This often results in using the wrong control measures. Also, by identifying insect pests first, before you spray or treat plants, you may be able to use a relatively safe tonic or biological control measure instead of potentially harmful chemicals -- chemicals which over time may hurt you, your family or your pets. Hence a home owner, gardener or farmer is wise to identify the type of insect causing an infestation and damaging or destroying their crops BEFORE treating them with dangerous, potentially deadly, chemicals.

It is also necessary to identify insects or other pest, such as fleas, spiders or mites which may be causing an infestation. When trying to control infestations of homes or other living structures of people or animals, identifying the pest is an essential for effective and economical control. Often people treat their homes or property with very toxic cancer causing chemicals without ever first identifying the cause of an infestation. Sometimes unethical pest control operators make treatment for the wrong type of pest because they want to make money. Millions of dollars are wasted every year because people do not identify the type of pest before they decide an effective and economical control measure.

How to Submit Specimens for Identification

BUGS: Insect Identification Service. Specimens of small insects and arthropods may be collected and preserved in 70% isopropyl alcohol and submitted for identification by home owners, gardeners, small farmers or anyone who is suffering an infestation of an unknown type of insect pest. Shown here is a three ounce glass specimen vial. Note that a label has been placed inside the vial. A 0.5mm Pentel mechanical pencil was used to write on the label and specify the date, place and name of the collector. Preserved specimens may then be sent for identification before money is wasted using the wrong or harmful, cancer causing insecticides or other improper pest control measures. Sometimes this even prevents killing of harmless insects or even beneficial species which may actually be helping to control other harmful insects.

Now you can get those insect pests identified. Just collect as many pest insects as possible in a small vial of 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol available in any grocery store or drug store). You may use a small glass vial to send insects; these can be ordered on ebay or from a supplier of specimen vials; you may also use any small vial that has a tight fitting lid such as a medicine vial or empty spice bottle. Simply collect as many insects as possible. Us a small paint brush, feather or other instrument to collect the insect pest. You can even make a simple collection instrument by using a plastic soda straw and inserting a bird feather into the straw. Leave the end of the feather sticking out of the straw so that it may rake or brush insects from plants into the vial of alcohol.

You should collect as many insects as you can for identification. You may wrap tape around the vial cap to insure it does not leak; plastic electric tape works ideal for this purpose; you can also use Scotch tape, masking tape or even duct tape. Then wrap the vial with bubble wrap and send inside a small box. You can also send small vials inside mailing tubes or large envelopes. Popcorn, newspaper or paper from shredded documents also makes a good packing material. Be sure to place your return address on all specimen shipments and to ship to the correct address. Also you may want to include such alert messages as: FRAGILE, GLASS, HANDLE WITH CARE, on the package written with a large size black or red permanent marker. The post office or shipping agency can also stamp the package with alert messages. This will help insure that your package arrives in good condition.

Collect insects and put them in vials containing 70% isopropyl alcohol and send them for identification. Shown here are insects in small glass specimen vials. You may use any type of small vial that does not leak to submit insects. You can help prevent some vials from leaking by using a piece of plastic wrap (Saran Wrap or Glad Wrap) on top of the bottle before screwing down the cap and then wrapping plastic tape (electric tape) around the top of the vial.

You should complete and include the Insect Identification Form (shown below) with each specimen that you submit for identification. You may also write a label and insert it inside the vial with the insects. If you do this use PENCIL to write the label. Do NOT use ink as it may be dissolved by the alcohol. It is recommended that you use a 0.5mm Pentel pencil to write a small label. Print as clearly as possible so your label is easy to read; then insert the label inside the vial. Be sure that your name is on the label that goes inside the vial and that you also include the Insect Identification Form shown below.

You are responsible for all packing and shipping fees; vials and specimens become the property of BUGS Insect Identification Service (BIIS) and cannot be returned. You should keep additional specimens in a separate vial for yourself if you want to have these for your records. We are not responsible for receipt of damages specimens. You agree to release BUGS: Insect Identification Service, their agents, representatives and/or employees of any and all liability whatsoever with respect to service, recommendations, and/or identification of insect pests; BUGS Insect Identification Service is NOT responsible for the loss of property, real or imaged, and/or any hurt, harm, injury, real or imagined, that may come from or arise out of usage of insect pest identification services. You should consult a local pest control operator to treat your home, lawn, garden or other property for insect pests or infestations
